One of the latest smartphones to emerge from Acer has been highlighted as a possible alternative to similarly-equipped handsets like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, HTC Touch Pro2 and Nokia E75.

According to Niall Magennis in an article for Trusted Reviews this week, the company’s M900 device is one of a trio of models that made their debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year.

The expert explained that at first glance, the mobile bears some resemblance to the aforementioned Sony, HTC and Nokia range in that it has a slide-out qwerty keyboard.

However, unlike the TouchPro 2, which is praised for its responsiveness and adaptability, some concern is directed to the way these buttons would fare at “a decent typing speed” – due to the fact they are so close to one another.

On the positive side, Mr Magennis explained that one of the main points that the Acer M900 has in its favour is a screen which is “extremely large” at 3.8-inches diagonally and with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, this may please users looking for a model with healthy multimedia credentials.

Although slightly bulky, the gadget boasts an integrated Samsung S3C 6410 processor which runs at 522 MHz, 128 MB of RAM memory, as well as quad-band GSM, HSDPA and Wi-Fi support.

The five-megapixel camera is described in the review as “decent” and the inclusion of an LED flash and autofocus means is also welcomed – and all of this is based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform.

Acer may be more well-known to some consumers as a maker of laptops, netbooks and desktop PCs.
