Well it appears that Apple have called a shock press conference for Friday at 6pm UK time and speculation is mounting that the conference is related to the dreaded iPhone 4 reception issue. The internet has been in flames over reports of dropped calls and signal issues. Apple’s initial response consisted of telling everyone that ‘you are holding the phone wrong’ which obviously caused much consternation amongst owners of the device and howls of derision amongst the anti Apple brigade.
There have even been whispers, or loud declarations, that Apple are about to announce a complete recall of the iPhone 4. To be honest we think that is internet lunacy. Put simply it would be way too expensive to recall the iPhone 4. The damage to the Apple brand would also be immense. Maybe Apple customers will be content to see Steve Jobs wailing, crying and begging for forgiveness while floating on his Wi-Fi enabled iCloud.
There are also a few rumours that Apple might be giving away it’s extortionately priced bumper case to solve the problem, which would probably be a PR win when compared to the nuclear option of a total recall. It is believed that the bumper, or glorified plastic band which is what it is, resolves the signal issue as you can’t touch the antenna when the bumper is on.
So we wait with baited breath to see what Apple will announce. Maybe it will be some new iPhone case that automatically makes you more attractive and 20% more smug. But we doubt it will be a full recall, although anything can happen. We suspect that the ‘bumper’ giveaway will be the more likely outcome and we are all for freebies!
