Apple iPhone 3G Firmware 3.0 – Was It Worth The Wait?

Apple iPhone 3.0 UpdateLike thousands of other iPhone owners I was waiting around yesterday for the new 3.0 firmware upgrade and I have to say I was not that impressed. After leaving work I ventured home to be caught up in a family issue and missed the official launch time of 6:20 GMT and by the time I got around to connecting it to my laptop and having to update iTunes it had just gone nine.

This meant I got caught in the folly of people all trying to updates their phones at the same time and had a massive problem then activating my phone after the update, but this is why I love Twitter! After a quick search on Twitter I saw a little trick that could get around the activation problem by disabling your Internet connection before applying the update, and the reinstating your connection you could get around the activation problem.

It might have had something to do with the waiting and the suspense (those Apple guys sure know how to build anticipation) but I was rather underwhelmed with the new update. Maybe I was expecting too much, but all I seemed to find were a number of features that should have been in the iPhone 3G from the start. The new features I am referring to are:

  • MMS
  • Cut, Copy & Paste
  • Proper Bluetooth Support
  • Spotlight Search
  • Landscape Keyboard

Most of the other new features I have to say I am not that bothered about, I would however be really excited by tethering if O2 were not charging the earth for it (come on guys, free data means free data surely)! Now will my opinion change when the app’s start getting updated and we can see the full benefits of all the new features but for now not as impressed as I had hoped I would be. What do you think?

Worth the wait? Yes.

Underwhelming? Also yes.

Worth the wait because it brought a lot of useful features that will make most of the day-to-day tasks I carry out on my iPhone a lot easier.

Underwhelming because the majority of these features should have already been there. Also, the spotlight search seems to search the email bin too, and given I receive a lot of notification emails during the day which I delete after reading, it can make filtering down the search results hard. Safari doesn’t seem to save htaccess based user/passes either.

The phone generally feels a bit tighter though and Safari definitely seems quicker. Looking forward to seeing what app developers do with 3.0, but this update just seems to have made me want a 3GS more now after seeing glimpses of the potential there (the compass and video camera are really tempting too).

I think copy and paste should have been there from at least v2 of the OS, but the other stuff I think is a great addition and just proves that Apple is continuing to innovate in all the right areas for the iPhone.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not iPhone bashing as no other phone has come close in my opinion but the new update was just a bit mmmh.

It has kind of made me lose interest in upgrading to the iPhone 3GS though which is probably a good thing considering the price.
