Apple iPhone apps for direction and destructionTwo new applications have been launched for the Apple iPhone 3G S which could tempt those in the market for a new touchscreen smartphone – although both are very different in terms of content.

It was announced this week that a new downloadable software service had been launched by Trafficmaster that would allow users of the handsets to better equip themselves for UK travel using the latest navigational technology.

Smartnav Mobile, which is also compatible with a range of BlackBerry and Windows-based mobiles that carry GPS, is designed as an all-in-one solution that also provides live traffic information and customer support offering.

Trafficmaster advised that a team of personal assistants would be available to subscribers and highlighted the fact that the release is based on a product that has already been voted Best Handheld Satnav at the 2009 BusinessCar Techie Awards.

John Lawrence, sales and marketing director of the group, said Smartnav Mobile is a significant development for the sector and by making it available to a range of modern phones it will be even more accessible to consumers.

He added the application "will help motorists save time, fuel and mileage by keeping them on the best route at all times, avoiding congestion and unnecessary delays".

However, for those more interested in the leisure facilities of their Apple iPhone 3G, an eagerly-awaited game was put to the test by Liam Cassidy of theAppleBlog this week.

The expert said Star Wars: Trench Run is an iPhone game that fans of George Lucas’ 1977 movie will adore, as it features the climactic X-Wing scene from the end of the film in which Luke Skywalker is charged with the task of destroying the Death Star.

"If you love Star Wars, this is a game you should own," Mr Cassidy concluded.
