A new survey has highlighted the popularity of social networking use via modern mobile phones – such as the Apple iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Sony Ericsson W995.

According to Facebook, there are now even more people than ever checking messages, updating statuses and keeping in touch with their friends and family via the site’s dedicated mobile application.

Launched in 2006, it is advised that Facebook Mobile now has 65 million active users across the world – a figure it states has increased by 20 million in the last eight months alone.

It states this “milestone” is testament to the popularity of having access to a social networking account while being away from a desktop computer or laptop and having the service to hand “wherever you go”.

The group explained – in a post on its official blog page – that it would continue to hone the service and make improvements wherever it saw fit, including making sure it was always compatible with the latest phones and operating systems.

“We have translated the mobile site into other languages, launched Facebook SMS and deployed a wide range of applications for hundreds of mobile handsets, including Facebook for Blackberry, Facebook for iPhone and Facebook for Nokia,” it concluded.

In other news, a study published by O2 this week showed that more mums were getting online and engaging with modern technology in a bid to make family life easier.

The survey showed the number of gadget-loving active female parents using Facebook was now around 76 per cent, while 56 per cent said they were the household member most likely to have control of the TV.
