iPhone4So after months of furious internet based speculation and rumour mongering Steve Jobs, or Techno Moses as we like to call him, has finally unveiled the most desired gadget of the year: The iPhone 4.  At Select Mobile we delight in disproving hype and telling it like it really is but for once our expectations have been met and surpassed by this awesome bit of kit.

We complained at length that the camera on board the iPhone was not good enough so Mr Jobs has given us a five megapixel camera with flash.  We shook our fists and said that the iPhone was a bit on the chubby side so Apple announced that the iPhone 4 will be 24% thinner than previous models.  We bemoaned the battery life on every iPhone that has come out so far, so Mr Jobs gives us a device that offers 7 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time.  We begged for multitasking and with iPhone 4 we finally have it.

The one major potential irritant to come out of the various announcements to do with iPhone 4 came in the form of iAD, a new advertising platform designed to monetise the use of apps.  Having adverts pop up when you’re in the middle of hardcore game of football manager could be massively annoying.  Hopefully there will be some way that you can opt out of iAD if you are using premium paid for apps, but somehow we doubt that.

So all in all iPhone 4 promises to be a real evolution for iPhone which is about time.  We know that the 3GS was only ever going to be a stop gap handset but even that should have had some of the improvements that have come with iPhone 4, such as a flash for instance.  But overall we can’t complain and this announcement has us more than a tiny bit excited, so stay tuned for more iPhone 4 news as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Recombu has some hands on iPhone 4 pictures and a iPhone 4 review.

UPDATE 2: Engadget also has a nice hands on of the iPhone 4 with a video.
