LG GD510 Pop is 'one for the sun'Consumers looking for a handset that is focused on offering a sustainable energy solution may be interested in the latest comments from LG regarding one of its new touchscreen devices.

This week, the South Korean manufacturer outlined more of the features that are available on its GD510 model – including a selection of facilities designed to help drive down the carbon emissions levels of the user.

It advised that the phone – which also goes by the name of the LG Pop – has been equipped with a battery cover that also acts as a solar panel, charging the handset when in contact with sunlight.

Those concerned about exactly how much difference this will make were also reassured that the feature is more than just a gimmick. "Ten minutes under the sun? provides up to two minutes 15 seconds of talk time or up to 180 minutes of standby time," LG said.

In addition, the firm noted there were other green features that may appeal to some eco-conscious buyers, explaining that the GD510 offers a menu facility that links to an eco-calculator, which allows the user to see how much the solar technology is affecting their energy use.

Dr Skott Ahn, president and chief executive officer of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said the move formed part of a wider commitment to a more socially-responsible manufacturing strategy.

"We develop our products based on the company’s goal of eco-friendly sustainability. Our green policy is included in the handset’s entire lifecycle process, from raw materials through production, logistics, usage and disposal," he added.

LG recently added the BL40 Chocolate to its range of touch-enabled handsets.
