A new handset from LG has been put to the test in a new review, with particular attention paid to the transparent, numeric, slide-out keypad it comes equipped with.

Russell Jefferies said in an article for Mobile Burn this week that the South Korean manufacturer has put out an “intriguing” device in the LG GD900 Crystal, adding it had also updated the user interface (UI) to make full use of its facilities.

The model is praised for its innovative, see-through keyboard and how this ties in with the S-class UI – which has previously been seen on multimedia mobiles like the Arena – making for an overall experience that is “rather unique”.

Items can be moved around using the same type of operation one would use on a typical touchscreen model. However, Mr Jeffries noted this is done with the slide-out panel and not the display on the front of the phone itself.

“In conclusion, the LG GD900 Crystal is a handsome-looking handset that is likely to intrigue anybody that sees it, courtesy of its transparent and functionally impressive keypad,” he advised.

These comments were echoed by Flora Graham this week in a review for the Cnet UK website. The expert agreed that many of the touch-sensitive options were “handy” and with gesture control, two screens and hardly any proper buttons “there’s hardly any surface that doesn’t set off some response”.

LG unveiled the GD900 Crystal at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year. The phone boasts an eight-megapixel camera with video recording, Dolby audio and 3G/HSDPA connectivity.
