LG said this week its LG KP500 Cookie handset has exceeded expectations of how successful it was thought to be.

The Cookie is now available in 14 colours and comes with a 3.0-megapixel camera, full touch screen, 3D accelerometer and active interface with widgets.

Providing an affordable touch screen phone was LG’s aim when it started to develop the handset and the five millionth sale was recently celebrated by the manufacturer, which has forecast this figure to reach ten million by the end of 2009.

“Achieving five million units in sales in only nine months is proof that we’re on track with our goal to make Cookie a phone that’s loved by everyone,” remarked president and chief executive officer of LG Electronics Dr Scott Ahn.

Other benefits consumers may have experienced with the handset include its “slim and lightweight” design, the company added, going on to say that nine of the gadgets are sold every minute.

News of the Cookie’s success preceded another announcement from LG this week, in which it confirmed that 2.1 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions have been cut from its production line during the first half of this year.

It achieved this via better energy-efficiency measures and improved manufacturing processes.

The company is aiming to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases it and its products emit by 2012 to 15 per cent lower than those recorded in 2007.
