The launch of a new user interface (UI) for the Google Android operating system could be enough to establish its creator as a key figure in the smartphone market,it has been advised.

Last week, Motorola announced the launch of the DEXT – which also goes by the name of the CLIQ – and confirmed it would be the first to make use of the MOTOBLUR system.

A spokesman for Mobile Gazette, an online news and reviews resource which provides commentary on the latest developments in the sector, said the move could be big for the manufacturer.

Conrad Longmore, editor of the site, explained there was much more to the launch of the gadget than it being just another piece of hardware in the firm’s collection.

He noted the other facilities of the DEXT associated with the new UI show Motorola was using its experience in the networking market to provide a useful solution consumers could warm to.

In addition, Mr Longmore highlighted the fact Apple’s mobile phone success was only achieved when the firm was able to offer a service that people could really use – in the form of a third-party applications store.

"People are very interested in what the iPhone can do. MOTOBLUR certainly seems to do a lot and it could be enough to turn the heads of consumers," he said, concluding suggestions a second MOTOBLUR handset would be out this year may even lead to a reinvention of the RAZR.

Samsung also unveiled plans to launch a Google Android-powered mobile earlier this month entitled the Galaxy.
