The Nokia N900 has claimed the title as being the company’s last Product Announcement of the Year for the Noughties, as the handset manufacturer looks to the coming 120 months of development.
Revealed on the firm’s Nokia Conversations community, the accolade for the Nokia N900 recognises its innovative features, which mark it out as 2009’s most eagerly anticipated Nokia handset launch.
They include functions more typical to a desktop computer – including autocomplete in internet forms and keyword searches via Google, directly from the address bar, without the need to type in the address of the search engine itself.
For the coming 120 months, more innovation is expected, as community contributor Mike anticipates “exciting concepts and projects” to come in the Tenties.
Gestural interaction is one area where Nokia has been canvassing opinion as it looks for ways to make handsets more natural for their users.
A particular area of focus in recent brainstorming sessions has been the issue of how to switch the phone on to its silent mode quickly and intuitively.
Nokia reveals that some of its users have suggested that a simple squeeze of a pressure-sensitive handset could be a satisfactory solution.
However, even more natural alternatives have also been mooted, such as the option of shushing the device in order to activate silent mode.
Parents in particular may appreciate one user’s recommendation that a handset be created that can recognise when it is being glared at by its owner.
In this way, it would switch to silent mode immediately, like the way that a child falls silent when they suspect that they have been naughty.
