The Samsung M8910 Pixon 12 has split two reviewers in their most recent articles, partially over the gadget’s high-performance integrated camera.
In a piece for Trusted Reviews, Edward Chester heaped praise on the device and said it followed in the footsteps of other photography-focused handsets in the South Korean manufacturer’s range.
He explained that with the Samsung i8510 Innov8, the firm had brought in the era of the eight-megapixel cameraphone and added this had now been followed up with the 12-megapixel M8910.
Aesthetically, Mr Chester said the model is "the most camera-like" he has ever tested, but went on to say all of the hardware that contributes to its picture-taking credentials do little to make the gadget look good.
However, the reviewer added that the model was "undoubtedly the best camera phone we’ve used" in terms of its simplicity, features and performance.
Elsewhere, Flora Graham said in an article for Cnet this week that at £35-per-month on a contract or for £530 sim-free, the touchscreen phone may hold little interest for those not looking for a mobile that centres on photography.
"The Pixon 12’s camera impressed us with its good range of options," she noted, but concluded that the user experience of the device was "frustrating" and overall it was an "average" mobile.
Samsung unveiled the device in June and highlighted not only the fact that it was the first 12-megapixel handset in the world, but also that it offered access to a wide range of social networking and media sharing sites like Facebook, MySpace, Picasa and Photobucket.
