Sony Ericsson Xperia collection set for 'entertaining' upgradesThe Sony Ericsson Xperia (X) 10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro are all to receive software updates this year that the phone manufacturer believes will make the series the most entertaining around.

According to the firm, the handsets will be upgraded to the Android 2.1 operating system in certain markets from July, which will come as welcome news to those who already think their gadgets feels out of date despite only being released in late 2009.

The collection currently runs on Android 1.6, which was first made available in October 2009.

According to the developer of the operating system, 2.1 isn’t much different to 2.0 – but what will please X10 users is that they will now have the chance to take advantage of a number of key features absent on 1.6.

They include a combined email inbox so you can browse numerous accounts on one page, search functionality for saved messages, an improved keyboard, better browser and various other nifty updates.

Additional facilities, such as enhancements to Mediascape and Timescape, as well as the ability to connect the X10 wirelessly to televisions, will take place in the fourth quarter of 2010, the company went on to state.

Commenting on the news, Steve Walker, head of product marketing at the firm, said: "Sony Ericsson’s vision is to be the communication entertainment brand. We are focusing strongly on the smartphone market and specifically on creating the most entertaining smartphones.

"Sony Ericsson is uniquely positioned to do this thanks to our experience in creating Walkman and Cybershot phones and the strong collaboration with our parent company Sony."

What do you think of the announcement? About time the X10 went to Android 2.1, or too little too late?
